2509 It is with great sadness we regret to announce the sudden passing of Ken Larkins, on October 23, 2021 at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 75 years.
Ken will lovingly be remembered by his two sons, Scott (Marla), Craig (Chris); grandchildren Turner, Jace and Skye; siblings, David (Dianne) Larkins, Ronald Larkins, Robert (Carol) Larkins, Donna (Kevin) Mason, Valerie Orr, Debbie (Ron) Garnham, Alice (Garry) Godfrey, Heather (Drew) Stobie, Norma (Albert) Larkins, Keith (Debbie) Larkins, Marjorie (Cam) Larkins, Brenda (Donnie) Little; brother-in-law Charlie Hollohan; also left to cherish his memory are numerous, nieces, nephews relatives and friends.
Ken was predeceased by his loving wife Eileen Larkins; parents Donald and Ethel, siblings Linda and Bryan, sisters-in-law Audrey Larkins and Anne Tuckett, brothers-in-law Bill Flynn, Ken Orr and Brian Tuckett.
Ken was born December 11, 1945 in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. He was the second eldest of 15 siblings. Ken lived most of his life on the family farm, where he learned the value of hard work. Hunting was a big part of living on the farm, but it was not something Ken enjoyed. In fact he could often be seen waving his arms behind his father?s back hoping to scare away the animals as his father took aim. As a young adult Ken left the family Farm to pursue employment in Winnipeg. During his time in Winnipeg he met Eileen Frew. They fell in love and were married on July 21 1975. In 1976 Eileen gave birth to their first son Kenneth Scott. A year later they packed up and moved out west to Regina. In Regina Ken enjoyed working at Chicken on the Run and being in the restaurant industry. In 1979 Ken and Eileen welcomed their second son Craig into the world. It was also during their time in Regina that Ken and Eileen began to cheer for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, even dressing the boys in Riders gear (something they deny to this day). Ken loved Regina and made numerous friends whom he stayed in contact with throughout the years. But having the majority of both their families in Manitoba they decided in 1984 to head back to Winnipeg. Ken found employment at Red Carpet Coffee vending company, where he worked until the company closed. He worked various jobs over the years but always found joy working for Chicken Delight. Ken retired from Pallisser furniture, but continued to manage the Chicken Delight in Transcona for many years until he finally retired fully. In retirement Ken enjoyed the extra time he was able to spend with his grandkids and could often be found catching up with friends over coffee. As the kids got older Ken would always try to get to all there sporting events and school functions. He could often be heard cheering from the crowd at the kids games.
Ken loved sports including football, hockey and especially curling. He even got into the Raptors basketball playoffs. His passion was football though and would attend Grey Cup parties every year with good friends. Anyone that knows Ken, will fondly remember his epic dance moves at socials, and weddings, often taking over the dance floor! Ken was an entertainer and loved to make people laugh. He was a jokester and loved to get people going, especially his niece Susan. Ken had his own language that nobody could seem to replicate or understand, except maybe his pets and other animals. This language was not only used around family members, but sometimes it would come out when trying to order a sub from Subway or anywhere in public really. Often to the confusion from the person serving him and met by laughter with those around him.
Ken loved dogs and anywhere he lived there was always a dog around. When Eileen passed away suddenly in 2018, Ken found himself lonely and he filled that loneliness with his beautiful dog Ella. Ken had a special bond with dogs and was given the nickname the Dog Father, as dogs would gravitate to him. The last few years Ken found himself back to where his life started in Portage la Prairie. He moved in with his sister Debbie and her husband Ron in their home at Delta beach. Ken and Ron would spend hours chatting and always had visitors stopping by. Moving back to Portage la Prairie, Ken was able to reconnect with many friends he hadn?t seen in years. He was so happy and Ron, Debbie and family were happy to have him.
A private family viewing was held in Portage la Prairie. A memorial service will take place in Winnipeg at a later date; information will be added once available.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel.
Larkins, Kenneth (I4506)

2512 It is with profound sadness that her family announces the passing of Angela Christina Hughes Brooks, age 47, on January 26, 2022, at her home in Catonsville, MD. Angela was born September 26, 1974 to Stephen J. Hughes, Esq., and Angela C. Atkins. Angela was the eldest of three children.
From her earliest years, she stood out as an outgoing, imaginative, artistic and hilarious person, qualities that continued to define Angela her whole life. She attended St. Agnes Elementary School and Seton Keough High School before she was accepted into one of the top five public performing arts high schools in the nation, the Baltimore School for the Arts. In 1992 she graduated with a diploma in Theater. She continued her creative pursuits at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the double majors of English Literature and American Studies, graduating with honors.
Angela chose a career in professional editing and writing, joining the Watermark Press out of college. In 1999, Angela graduated to Cadmus Professional Communications (now Cenveo Publisher Services), assuming the responsibilities of journal production manager and senior copy editor for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. She achieved further career success in 2006 when she accepted the position of Technical Writer/Editor at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab.
In 2006, Angela met the love of her life, Gregory J. Brooks. Greg matched Angela in her love of art, music, books, and travel. A prolific artist, Greg attended the prestigious Maryland Institute College of Art, or MICA. On Cinco de Mayo 2007, Angela and Greg married under the trees in the back yard of their historic Catonsville home surrounded by family and friends.
Angela and Greg shared another bond that proved compelling?their love of cats. Both brought a trio of cats to the marriage, which they loved like their children. Angela volunteered at the Catonsville Cat Clinic to socialize abandoned kittens that were soon to attend adoption fairs. This increased the little cats? likelihood of being selected. She volunteered to do the same for abandoned cats at the Lucky Cat Rescue, a nonprofit that cares for cats in crises. Angela also fostered abandoned cats, although she always ended up keeping them. Never were cats so loved.
Above all else though, Angela loved her siblings and her nieces and nephew, who held a precious place in her heart. Angela was so much more than an aunt to them?cheerleader, confidant and close friend.
Angela had a brilliant mind, a quick wit, and an enormous sense of generosity. She showed an amazing resilience throughout her life and always kept an open and loving heart. She was a dear and loyal friend to so many, in the truest sense of the word. She was a kind and gentle soul, and one of the loveliest people you could ever meet. Angela is loved by so many friends who became like family across decades of her life. Her capacity to find joy in the everyday, and her disposition to share that joy with those she loved will remain as her living legacy among those who were fortunate enough to be counted within that group.
Angela is survived by her sister, Sarah Pain Wagner (Jonathon) of Mt. Washington, MD; her brother, Andrew (Drew) S. Hughes of Catonsville, MD; her nephew, Aidan Hughes; her nieces, Casper Hughes, Lillian Hughes, of Catonsville, MD, and Esme Wagner of Mt. Washington, MD; her mother, Angela Atkins (Charles Wyckoff) of Ellicott City, MD; her in-laws, Joseph and Marlene Brooks of Burlington, NC; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who love and will miss her dearly.
Angela was predeceased by her husband, Gregory J. Brooks of Catonsville, MD; her father, Stephen J. Hughes, Esq., of Baltimore, MD; her brother-in-law, Andrew J. Pain of Oxford, England; her grandparents, Joseph F. Hughes and Lillian M. Hughes of Catonsville, MD; her grandparents George and Jennie Atkins, Glen Burnie, MD; and her uncle, P. Michael Hughes of Westminster, MD.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the Candle Light Funeral Home in Catonsville, MD, on Saturday, March 26th from 2:00-4:00. A memorial service will immediately follow from 4:00-4:30.
A celebration of Angela?s life will be held on May 22nd at Patapsco State Park, with more details to follow.

2532 JAMES BASS

Among the residents of Dayton who came to Webster county when it was a frontier district and substantially contributed toward the upbuilding and development of the community is James Bass, who owns over eight lumclred acres of land in Veil and Dayton townships, much of which he bought directly from the government, in addition to some valuable Dayton property. He was born in North Carolina, April 27. 1832, and is a son of Edward and Mary (Saffley) Bass. He is of English and Irish
extraction and represents the third generation of his family in America, his paternal grandfather being a veteran of the Revolutionary war and having participated in the battle of Bunker Hill. In 1835 Edward Bass removed with his family to Indiana and engaged in farming. Twenty years later he came to Iowa, purchasing two hundred and forty acres of land in Boone county, to which he subsequently added another twenty acres of timber land. There both he and the mother passed the remainder of their lives,
his death occurring on the 3d of February, 1883, at the venerable age of ninety-four years, "his natal day having been the 17th of January, 1789. The mother survived him for three years, passing away July 15, 1886.

HISTORY OF WEBSTER COUNTY 115

James Bass, who was a child of three years when his parents left North Carolina, was reared to manhood in Owen county, Indiana. In the acquirement of his education he attended the subscription schools of that state until he was fourteen when he laid aside his text-books and began assisting his father with the work of the farm. He remained at home until he attained his majority, then started out to make his own way in the world. In the fall of 1852, he came to Iowa, settling in Webster county. As he had never learned a trade, he went to work as a farm hand, being unfamiliar with any other ccupation. Although he received meager wages, he was thrifty and temperate in his habits and soon accumulated sufficient capital to enable him to buy eighty acres of government land, for which he paid from a dollar and a quarter to a dollar and a half per acre. It was located seven miles northeast of Dayton in Yell township and has ever since been in possession of Mr. Bass and is known as the old homestead. He energetically applied himself to putting this under cultivation, meeting with such lucrative returns from his farming that he was able from time to time to increase his holdings until he now owns eight hundred acres of farming land, which he is renting. He resided on his homestead until March, 1869. when he withdrew from the active work of the fields and removed to Dayton. He has ever since made this city his home and owns a very pleasant residence on Main street, where he is living.

Mr. Bass was married in 1857 to Miss Cassie Halloway, who was born in North Carolina on the 24th of March, 1837, and died in Dayton on the 3d of February, 1901. Her parents were also natives of North Carolina, and there the mother passed away many years ago. The father subsequently came to Webster county and made his home with our subject until just before the Civil war when he was married again. He died in February, 1881, and is buried in the Beem cemetery, near Lehigh, this
county. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bass. Mary Jane, the widow of Taylor Scott, who lives at Gowrie, this county, has seven children: Hubert, Nellie, Grace, Clifton, Cassie, Wilson and Leo. Rachel A. married Charles C. Miller, a school teacher of New Mexico. Addie, the wife of Thomas Bragg, a farmer south of Gowrie. has five children. Sherman, who conducts a pool and billiard hall in Dayton, married Julia Cascbolt and they have three children: Orville. Efifie and Fay. Grant, who works
in a cafe at Boone. Towa. married Cora Guthrie and they have three children : Halsey, Sylvia and Maxine. Miles, a rural mail carrier, married Jennie Nelson and they also have three children : Raymond, Marie and Mildred. Mina, the wife of Will Nichols, a traveling salesman of New Mexico, has two children, Velma and an infant. Elsie, who married Fred C. Esch, a clerk of Wyoming, has one child, Dorothy Adeline. Ella married Dr. L. E. Estick of Rockwell City, Iowa, and they have one child, Lewis Howard. On the 1st of March, 1906, Mr. Bass married Mrs. Anna Butler, a native of Canada and a daughter of John and Caroline Eliza (Bryant) Gates. The father, who was of Dutch extraction, was born in Kingston, Canada, and the mother in Ogdensburg, New York. He was a son of John Gates, who homesteaded one hundred acres of land, where the Kingston Market now stands in Ontario,
Canada. When the War of 1812 broke out he went to the front and is supposed to have been killed at the Battle of the Windmill, at Prescott, Ontario, as he was never heard from afterward. His son, John Gates, the father of Anna Bass, was one of the successful agriculturists of Kingston, Ontario, and acquired one thousand acres of valuable land in Frontenac county, upon which the youngest son, George Gates, is now residing. Mrs. Bass inherited two hundred acres of land from her father, which is now rented to her eldest son, George Henry Ayerst. Mr. Gates passed away in Canada in 1889, and the mother, who was of Irish and American descent, came to Iowa and made her home with
her son James Gates at Boone, until her death in 1901. Mrs. Bass was first married in 1861 to Francis Ayerst. of England. He died in Canada twenty-five years ago and she later became the wife of
Charles Butler, a veteran of the Civil war and a native of the state of New York, where he likewise died. In 1904, she located in Boone, Iowa, and there she was married two years later to Mr. Bass.

Mr. Bass, who has been a resident of Iowa for sixty years, has many interesting reminiscences to relate of the pioneer days. After the Indian massacre at Spirit Lake, there was a rumor of an
uprising among the natives in this section and three hundred men, of whom Mr. Bass was one, under command of Johnson McFarland and Joseph Thrift responded to the call to defend the settlers. They marched from Boonesboro to Webster City but as their services were not required they disbanded and returned home. In 1863, he again volunteered to fight the Indians under Captain Williams of Fort Dodge and went to Chain Lake to assist in constructing barracks for the protection of the settlers. Six months later they marched back to Fort Dodge and disbanded. On the 8th of November, 1864, he enlisted at Fort Dodge in Company K, Sixteenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry under Captain Slattman. Their regiment was ordered to report at Nashville, and there his company was detached and placed in the
One Hundredth and Thirty-second New York Infantry. He had his first experience in battle at Fort Xegley, and from there they moved on Fort Lookout, and then anticipiated in the battles of Kingston and Goldsboro, North Carolina. At the latter point his company rejoined their old regiment, and passing under General Sherman's command marched to Raleigh. They were stationed there for two weeks before Johnson surrendered. Following this they had a two days review at that point, going from there to Washington, D. C, to participate in the grand review. His regiment was then ordered to report at Louisville, Kentucky, where they were stationed until July 9, 1865, when they were discharged.
Air. Bass votes the democratic ticket and served as trustee in Yell township for several terms and was a school director there for many years. He is a member of Captain Dow-d Post, No. 329.
G. A. R., of Dayton and Airs. Bass belongs to the Women's Relief Corps and the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Bass who has attained the venerable age of eighty years, has the distinction of never having made a deed or given a mortgage and still owns every piece of property he ever purchased. Mr. Bass still enjoys the best of health and is well and vigorous and has remarkabIe eyesight. He takes great satisfaction in his achievements as he began life in early manhood without any capital, and by his own industry, perseverance and capable management acquired a competence that has long enabled him to live in retirement, and still enjoy all comforts of life.

Dudley was born in the R.M. of Louise in Manitoba and was educated in Pilot Mound, Manitoba. When he moved to Winnipeg, at the age of 19 years, he took his Jr. Accountancy course in Winnipeg. After graduating he began his employment career of 5 years with Inman Motors where he met Valerie, the love of his life. After a short period of dating they got married in 1960 and Dudley changed careers. For the next 50 years and until the day he died Dudley enjoyed his lifelong relationship with the construction industry. He was employed by Albert Gross of Gross Cartage and Dick Mulder of Mulder Construction. Dudley was the only person I knew who enjoyed going to work as much at the age of 25 as he did at the age of 76!! Whether Dudley was acting in the capacity of Dispatcher or General Manager he treated his coworkers as his extended family â?? he not only knew their names, aspirations, etc. but also knew about the personâ??s children and what they were doing and what direction their lives were taking. He enjoyed arranging for summer employment to many of the employeeâ??s children and showing them the "ropes". He enjoyed going to see their children at their hockey games or whatever they were involved in. He followed their career paths and was concerned for their safety when one of them went to serve our country in another country. Many of Dudleyâ??s relationships with numerous industry members became very dear friends â?? especially Ken and Sim Bednarz.
Dudley loved his sports â?? he was an avid fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Winnipeg Jets. He enjoyed playing softball with the Mulder group in the early years and in his later years he took up the game of golf and became hooked on it. While wintering in Mesa, Arizona he would play as many times as three times a week. Dudley enjoyed his yearly fishing/bonding trips with his "in-laws". This tradition began in the 1970â??s and it went from the fathers-in-law to the brothers-in-law to the inclusion of his nephew Fred Jr. in most recent years.
Dudley enjoyed travelling and he and Valerie spent many happy times in various countries travelling by car, train, escorted tours, ships, and air travel. They travelled from coast to coast in Canada, throughout much of the United States, Mexico, Caribbean, Panama Canal and many parts of Europe. Dudley enjoyed his solo trip to Seoul, Korea. In 2006 Dudley and Valerie settled down to snow birding in the Ranchos at Val Vista Village in Mesa, Az. where he became very involved in the community. He loved all the potluck dinners, singing Karaoke, Saturday night dances, golfing, rangering, visiting with friends and neighbors, nourishing many new friendships, co chairing the Canada Day event and most recently becoming the President of the Computer Club. He will be missed by all.
Dudley was an active member of Westminster United Church serving on the Property Management committee. He enjoyed his many friendships.
Valerie wishes to thank all those who assisted her in arranging for Dudley to be returned to Winnipeg and during the many trying times in Arizona especially to Teresa and Jim Young. Also many thanks for all the support, hugs, food, cards, etc. from everyone at Val Vista Villages. Special thanks to Dave Beaton, Gene Schultz, Jennie Mace and all those who were with Dudley at Dreamland Golf Course. Also special thanks to Shirley Christopherson, Barbara Howard, Daisy Hains, Gert Schultz, Joel and Joanne Spykerman, Dick and Shirley Davis, Jerianne Rimert, Tom and Arlene Rimert. Please forgive me for not naming all of you personally â?? I appreciate every hug and message of support and card. Dudley would be so proud of all of you.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster United Church, NW Maryland and Westminster with Rev. Robert Campbell officiating. Interment to follow in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.

2549 James Leonard Munro was born to Dan and Jean Munro on March 16th, 1927, on the family farm near Drake, Saskatchewan. James was the second youngest child of their family of 9 children. The family moved to Nipawin, Saskatchewan when James was still very young, and landed at the new Munro farm a few miles east of Nipawin. In the early years it was tough living on the farm, and Dan and Jean taught their children how to work, live, and love our Heavenly Father.
As a young man, James had many different jobs off the farm, and one spring after returning home from working in a steel foundry in Ontario, Gladys Nadiger was at the farm visiting his sisters. He told Gladys, they were going to be ?chums? that summer. It turned out they were married that year on November 3rd, 1948. Jim and Gladys had three children, Harold, Gwen, and Brian. They lived on the farm East of Nipawin until the kids started school, then they would move into town for winter, and back out to the farm for the summer.
Jim farmed with his son Harry until Harry?s sudden passing in 2013, and then farmed with his grandson, Vince up until the fall of 2023. His livelihood and passion was farming. He loved to be in the action and was always up for an adventure.
He made his choice to serve God as a young man and stayed true to that calling until the end of his life. He was at peace with his choice, and his words of encouragement and positive outlook were a light to all those who knew him.
Jim and Gladys? family has grown to include 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Jim loved and showed interest in his family and had a special relationship with each one. He would visit, play, tease, and joke, or ?tune you in,? if needed. Everyone who knew him has fond memories of our dad, grandpa, and friend.
