    • CARSWELL Charles Wendell (Major Retired) (Veteran of WWII and Korean War) - in hospital Pembroke, on Thursday, March 20, 2003 in his 79th year. Charlie "Chuck" Carswell of Petawawa, beloved husband of the late Rose Carswell. Dear father of Bill Carswell (wife Arlene), North Bay; Kyle Wicharuk (husband Ron), Petawawa; and Cyndy Grant (husband Doug), Port McNeill, BC. Grandfather to Amy, Becky, and Cherie Carswell; Ian & Peter Wicharuk; and Cameron Grant. Brother to Audrey Neuman (late husband Walter), Bancroft; and Eunice Williams (late husband Jack), Bancroft. Predeceased by brothers Dave, Lawrence, Robert and sister Amy Donaldson. Survived by sisters-in-law Loretto Carswell, New York, New York; and Muriel Carswell, Kingston. Also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews. Son of the late Billy and Annie Carswell. Also lovingly remembered by his mother-in-law Effie McCaw (late husband Bill), Brighton; and Catherine Smith (late husband Gordon), Perth Road. Chuck joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and served during WWII with the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in Canada, England, Holland, and finally in Germany when the war ended in 1945. He remained in Germany as part of the occupation force until repatriation to Canada in 1946. After a brief stint on "civvy" street, Chuck re-joined the Army and served as an Intelligence Officer with the Royal Canadian Regiment during the Korean War. His post war military career involved service in Edmonton, Germany, Picton, Cyprus and Petawawa with the Canadian Guards. Upon retirement from the Army in 1973, Chuck worked at the Petawawa National Forestry Institute until his final retirement in 1983. Resting at the Malcolm, Deavitt & Binhammer Funeral Home, 141 Renfrew St, Pembroke on Saturday 7-9:00 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 & 7-9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in St George's Chapel, C.F.B. Petawawa on Monday, March 24, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. Spring interment in All Saints Cemetery, Petawawa. Members of Petawawa Legion Branch #517 requested to gather at the Funeral Home Sunday at 7:30 p.m. for service. (As an expression of sympathy donations to the Pembroke General Hospital Building Fund; Petawawa Legion Branch #517; or the charity of your choice would be appreciated).
