- Carl N. Smiley died at his home in Danbury on Saturday, February 2, 1991, at the age of 52 years. Carl Neil Smiley was born at the Frederic Municipal Hospital on October 5, 1938, to Pearl Virginia (McKee) and John Walter Smiley.
He was a handicapped person, considered by his family as a child of GOD. Though his life was limited in some ways, it was full with family, friends and neighbors who enjoyed his company.
He lived in the Danbury area his whole life and was a familiar sight to the people of the community while he was out collecting cans on his daily walks. He also spent his time collecting horses, pictures and during his lifetime kept many different kinds of pets. Though he could not speak to them, they seemed to understand him.
He attended the Danbury Elementary School and later attended school at the Burnett County Achievement Center in Siren.
He is survived by five brothers: John Smiley of Lincoln, Oregon; Douglas Smiley of Danbury; Willis Smiley of Cloquet, Minnesota, Earl Smiley of Danbury and Robert Smiley of Danbury; also five sisters: Betty Soens of Hinkley, Minnesota, Dorothy Terzini of Isabella, Minnesota, Nell Livezey of Deltona, Florida, Mary Davis of Danbury and Ruth Frizzell of Meadville, Pennsylvania; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Herbert Smiley, three nieces: Julie Smiley, Bobbi Jo Smiley and Melissa Ann Davis.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 6, 1991, at 11 a.m. at the Danbury Methodist Church, with the Pastor Fay Johnson officiating. Musicians were Joanne Zillmer and Julie Macke.
Casket Bearers were Bob Phelps, Tom Mahlen, Howard Hills, Marty Clendening, Brian Jorgensen and Marshall Hill. Interment was at the Danbury Cemetery beside his parents. The Swedberg Funeral Home of Webster was in charge of the arrangements.
