Eleven children were born to this union, of whom five have died, the youngest son, William, making the supreme sacrifice in France in June 1918. Two sons and four daughters are left, namely: George Perry, of Nipissing; Hiram Perry, of Cedar Springs, Mich.; Mrs. Anna King, Nipissing; Mrs. Maude Stark, Shingleton, Mich.; Mrs. Pearl Atwood, Rockford, Mich.; and Mrs. Nellie McCallum, Emsdale. Mr. Perry came to Nipissing Township and settled at Hotham about 56 years ago, and except for about 8 years spent in Michigan he has always lived in the township, so he was one of the township's oldest settles.

Paige, ministers of the Followers of Christ, had charge of the service. The pallbearers were six grandsons - Joe, Simon and William King Jr., and Alex, Levi and Enos Byers.

    Notes:

On the 1st of March, 1906, Mr. Bass married Mrs. Anna Butler, a native of Canada and a daughter of John and Caroline Eliza (Bryant) Gates. The father, who was of Dutch extraction, was born in Kingston, Canada, and the mother in Ogdensburg, New York. He was a son of John Gates, who homesteaded one hundred acres of land, where the Kingston Market now stands in Ontario, Canada. When the War of 1812 broke out he went to the front and is supposed to have been killed at the Battle of the Windmill, at Prescott, Ontario, as he was never heard from afterward. His son, John Gates, the father of Anna Bass, was one of the successful agriculturists of Kingston, Ontario, and acquired one thousand acres of valuable land in Frontenac county, upon which the youngest son, George Gates, is now residing. Mrs. Bass inherited two hundred acres of land from her father, which is now rented to her eldest son, George Henry Ayerst. Mr. Gates passed away in Canada in 1889, and the mother, who was of Irish and American descent, came to Iowa and made her home with her son James Gates at Boone, until her death in 1901. Mrs. Bass was first married in 1861 to Francis Ayerst. of England. He died in Canada twenty-five years ago and she later became the wife of Charles Butler, a veteran of the Civil war and a native of the state of New York, where he likewise died. In 1904, she located in Boone, Iowa, and there she was married two years later to Mr. Bass.
    --1901

May be from Doris Gates Fleming, 1963, speaking of Anna Maria Gates.
"Grandpa Gates also had a sister Anna, who later came to the States to make her home. We knew her quite well, in her later years as she and her husband lived in Dayton, Iowa. One thing I remember about our Great Aunt Annie was that she never relinquished her loyalty to Canada and England. A large framed picture of Queen Victoria had a prominent place on her living room wall. When Aunt Annie spoke of Boone, she invariably called in Kingston. Great Aunt Annie was a very aristocratic looking little lady. When I was a child she came to visit quite often bustling and rustling in her black taffeta and lace. She also wore diamond earrings, which all of us girls admired."
