    Judith E. (Curtis) Bidwell, 71, of East Hartford beloved wife of Leroy Bidwell died Thursday, (May 19, 2005) at her home. She was born in Harrington, ME on August 15, 1933 daughter of the late Calvin and Nina Curtis. Judith began a career in nursing in Portland Maine and then was a dental technician for Dr. William Kasiler in East Hartford. In 1964 she began a career in law enforcement with the East Hartford Police Department. She had the distinction of being the first female sergeant to supervise the officers on patrol in New England. She was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant and retired in April of 1984. Judith received a bachelor's degree from Manchester Community College and also held several degrees in law enforcement. After her retirement she enjoyed 6 monthes a year in Florida with friends. She became a member of the Red Hat Society in Florida. Judith loved to cook, and entertain, had a great sense of humor and she will be sorely missed by friends and family. Besides her husband Leroy she is survived by four sons, Mark Brewster and his wife Erika of Alaska, Steven Brewster and friend Ronda of Ashford, Donald Bidwell of Vernon, and Michael Bidwell and his wife Laura of Rocky Hill. She also leaves a daughter Cathy Graska and her husband Steven of Georgia; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and a brother Jon Curtis. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a brother Leland. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 23, 11 a.m. at the Newkirk and Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford. Burial will follow in Silver Lane Cemetery, East Hartford. Calling hours are Sunday, May 22, from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to the St. Francis Home Health Agency & Hospice.
