He served with Co. E, 29th Georgia Infantry, "Meriwether Invincibles," in the Confederate Army. He enlisted 10 Sep 1861 as a first lieutenant. He was promoted to captain on 15 Oct 1862. He served in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. He was commended for his "intrepid coolness, fighting in the ranks, gun in hand, and stimulating his men by his words and example," and was promoted to major (field) in 1864. He was elected Clerk of the Court of Ordinary in Meriwether County, Ga. in 1865. As clerk, he took three oaths of office between 1865 and 1873: one to the Confederate States of America, one to the state of Georgia and one to the United States government. He suffered from cirhosis of the liver.
