    Edith B. (Banning) Cheever, 100, of Nashua, N.H., died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at the Hunt Community. She was the wife of the late Wilbur E. Cheever.
    She was born May 18, 1905, in Oakdale, the daughter of the late M. Parker and Edith (Abbott) Banning. She was a graduate of West Boylston High School in West Boylston, Class of 1924. Mrs. Cheever achieved her bachelor of arts degree from U.C.L.A. in 1928 and then her teaching certificate from U.C. in 1929. She had been a resident of Nashua for over 17 years, and previously lived in California and Lexington. She and her husband were high school classmates and married on June 26, 1931.
    Mrs. Cheever was a teacher for Banning High School in Banning, Calif. and Redlands Junior High School in Redlands, Calif. She also taught for 20 years in Lexington, at the junior high school. She retired in September of 1966.
    While residing in Lexington, she served on several town government projects, initiated the Pen Pal Program of AARP in three public schools, a coordinator of volunteers for the Historical Society, and was a 4-H leader for 10 years. She was an honorary member of Middlesex South Retired Teachers and a member of Retired Public Employees of Mass. Mrs. Cheever then moved to Nashua in 1988. In Nashua she became leader of the Knitting Group which makes clothing for local mothers and children in need. She was a member of RSVP, 55 Plus, and the Retired Teachers Association in Nashua and Massachusetts. She also was involved with the Nashua Senior Center.
    Her honors over the years include 4-H Alumni Recognition Award for 10 years of service in 1953, the first Minute-Man Cane Award for 40 years of outstanding service to the town of Lexington in 1988, National Retired Teacher 50th Anniversary Retired Educator Award and Award-Winning Letter on Healthy Aging Contest by the U.S. Postal Service both in 1997, and Letter of Appreciation for Service for five years in National "Make A Difference Day" from President Clinton in 2000. She also helped her husband write over four English High School text books, "English for Every Use."
    At one time, Mrs. Cheever was active in both Hancock Church and Pilgrim Congregational Church of Lexington, of which she was a founding member. In Nashua, she was an associate member of The First Church (Congregational) U.C.C.
    She is survived by two sons, Wilbur D. Cheever and his wife, Kathryn, of Freeport, Maine, and David W. Cheever and his wife, Alba Lutz, of Columbia, S.A.; a daughter, Edith Hale Van Beek and her husband, John, of Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, David Norman Cheever and his wife, Vivian, of West Boylston; a sister-in-law, Mildred Loewen of Lodi, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
    Mrs. Cheever was predeceased by her three sisters, a sister-in-law, Eleanor Welsh, and a brother-in-law, Delbert Loewen.
    A memorial service will be held at a later date at the family’s convenience.

    Arrangements were under the care of the Davis Funeral Home, Nashua, N.H.
