  1. 1.  Cecilia Ann LaPlace was born on 22 Apr 1937 in Middletown, Connecticut, USA (daughter of Cecil Charles LaPlace and Annie Caroline Powers); died on 1 Mar 2004 in Middletown, Connecticut, USA.

    Notes:

Cecilia LaPlace Fickett, 66, of Middlefield, ended her life's journey on Monday, (March 1, 2004) in the care of Hospice staff at Middlesex Hospital. Ceil was born and spent her childhood in Essex and Old Saybrook. She moved to Middlefield in the early 1960s. She was predeceased by her parents, Cecil and Annie (Powers) LaPlace, her husband, Edwin Fickett and her younger brother, David LaPlace. Cecilia is survived by her daughter, Hollie Rose of Middlefield and Middletown; her sisters, Eunice Tolx (Maine) and Colleen Traynor (Virginia); and four LaPlace brothers, George (Connecticut), Richard (California), Milton (Connecticut), and Robert (Connecticut), as well as countless nieces, nephews and in-laws. Ceil was a dedicated friend and a supportive mother. She had a quirky sense of humor and a bubbly personality. She was famous for taking in strays, be they animal or human. If a living being crossed her path who needed a place to be, a way to feel safe, and some food in their belly, she was there to give it with a smile and a hug. She was an active member of the Middlefield Federated Church and enjoyed working the Durham Fair booth with them until her battle with cancer made it impossible. Cecilia had a rough first marriage and divorced before it was socially acceptable because it was the best thing for herself and for her daughter. She raised Hollie mostly on her own (with the love and support of friends and the church) and never stopped helping her fulfill her dreams. In 1979, she met and married Edwin Fickett and had 13 happy years with him before he passed away in 1992. Ceil was the benefactor of Klekolo World Coffee in Middletown. Without her, Klekolo would not exist and Middletown would be a different place. She was a strong woman, long before it was fashionable or required for women to be strong. Her strength held through to the end. She will be greatly missed. Because she was yearning for springtime, and because she wanted so badly to see the new renovations in the Sanctuary at Middlefield Federated Church, services will be held in early April when spring is more tangible and the church renovations are complete. Join us April 3, at 11a.m. in the Sanctuary of the Middlefield Federated Church on Main St. in Middlefield, for a remembrance and a celebration of her life. Gifts of flowers purchased from Datura in Middletown, for the service or the reception at her home following, will help build credit for a monthly flower donation to Hospice in her name.
