    Essex - Robert L. Doane, 95, of Essex, passed peacefully on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Peregrine's Landing, Clinton.
    He was born Aug. 8, 1918, a 5th generation resident of Essex, to Charles and Edith (Palau) Doane. He attended Pratt High School, Connecticut College of Pharmacy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London. Lt. Doane served in the Coast Guard in the Gulf of Mexico and the South Pacific throughout World War II. He was a loving and devoted husband to Darline (Barnett) Doane for 61 years and a loving, devoted and inspiring father.
    He founded Doane's Pharmacy in 1951, retiring from the business in 1976. He was a pillar of the community and was involved in a variety of community activities, including: 60 year member of the Rotary Club receiving a Paul Harris Fellow Honor, founding member of the Essex Ambulance Association, director of the CBC Bank, and active member of the Essex Yacht Club and founding member of the Pettipaug Yacht Club.
    Darline and Bob were pilots at the Mystic Seaport with over 30 years of volunteer time. Lifelong sailors, they enjoyed their time on the east coast leading to a 20 year residence in the Bahamas at their beloved Man-O-War Cay.
    Bob was predeceased by his wife, Darline Doane, in Oct 2003.
    He is survived by his five children, Timotha, Linda, Deborah, Robert, and John; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
    A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 5, at the First Congregational Church, Methodist Hill Road, Essex. Interment will be private at Riverview Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Essex Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 233, Ivorton, CT 06442.

    Darline Barnett Doane, 84, of Essex, died peacefully in her home early Wednesday, (October 1, 2003), surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, Robert, of 61 years; her five children, Timotha Doane of San Francisco, Linda Crown and her partner, Deborah Skinner of New London, Deborah Dempsey of Astoria, OR, Robert L. Doane, Jr. and his wife, Marilyn of Essex, and John Doane and his wife, Wendy of Westford, VT. Darline also leaves seven grandchildren, Jennifer Crown Hartman, John Crown, Robert, Rebecca, and Ryan Doane, and Aiden and Tyler Doane. She also leaves her sister Victoria Ellington of Barraboo, WI and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Darline was born in Boonville, MO December 10, 1918. Daughter of Dr. John Ambrose and Ruby Hall Barnett, she was the eighth of nine children. Raised in the Ozarks, she graduated from Springfield High School in 1937 where she played the herald trumpet in the Springfield Bugle Corp. and with the Kilties, a Scottish marching band. After a year at Springfield Teachers College, Darline followed her sister Juanita Hyde to Essex, where she promptly met handsome, young pharmacy student, Robert Doane. She attended Hartford Hospital School of Nursing graduating as an RN in 1942. That same year she married Lt. Robert Doane on Christmas Day in 1942 while he was on leave from the Coast Guard Academy. During World War II while Robert was stationed in Corpus Christi, she worked as a nurse in Spohn Hospital. After the war, they settled in Madison, CT prior to moving to their present home in Essex in 1954. Darline will be remembered for her love of music, both voice and piano, which she kept to the end, and her love of nature which she passed on to her children very early. Darline sang in the First Congregational Church choir for decades, was a passionate member of the Essex Garden Club, and with her husband participated in the Mystic Seaport Pilots Program for 45 years. Her community will remember her for her generosity toward friends and strangers, working for example, with disabled children in the High Hopes program. She is remembered by her children for her fiercely independent spirit, determination to participate in everything, and her assertiveness, which she taught her children very well. Over the years Darline and Robert have enjoyed skiing, sailing, golf and tennis. For 20 years they had a winter home in Plymouth, VT. In their retirement years, they enjoyed their winter home on Man-O-War Cay in the Bahamas and sailing their 27 foot Tartan, "Bonnie Lass", back and forth from Essex. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the First Congregational Church in Essex at 2 p.m. The family wishes to thank all the homecare providers for their expertise and support. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the First Congregational Church's Marjorie Sands Memorial Scholarship Fund at P.O.
