"Crescent' along the China coast when Canadians were being evacuated from that country. Probable Brutal Murder - The Loss of the Schooner Sam Colt
Probable Brutal Murder - The Loss of the Schooner Sam Colt
City Intelligence.
PROBABLE BRUTAL MURDER
THE LOSS OF THE SCHOONER SAM COLT
Suspicious Circumstances as to the Death of the Captain and Mate.
We published several days ago a brief account furnished by telegraph, of the loss of the schooner Sam. Colt, Capt. Geo. Hilliard of Portland, while en route from New Jersey to New Bedford with a cargo of coal and spars. Further particulars have come to hand. The vessel was ashore on Nantucket Island, and some of the people of the island upon going to her, found only the crew - two deck hands and a colored cook - on board. These men stated that heavy storm was encountered and the vessel shoaled. A heavy sea was running at the time, and the schooner was tossed violently toward the beach, the waves washing over her, making it difficult for any to remain on board. The mate went up into the rigging, and while there a powerful wave washed him overboard. The captain went below for a moment, and on coming up started forward, but before he had gone far, was also washed from the deck, and no more was seen of him. This is the story told by the men, though they varied some in their statements. No one questioned the truth of what they said at this time, and they left Nantucket soon after, since which time, we understand, nothing has been heard from them. Who they were, or from what part of the country they came from, does not appear. A few day's subsequent to the finding of the vessel, the bodles of the captain and mate were found upon the beach at Nantucket, and marks of violence wore discovered. The bruises were of such a character that suspicions of foul play were at once excited, and since the arrival home of the remains, the friends of the deceased are very confident that the crew committed a double murder, and, to cover up their crime, ran the vessel ashore purposely and told the stories they did. The probability of this being true is strengthened by the fact that the vessel was over sixty miles off her course. Capt. Hilliard was an experienced navigator-had been over the route many times-and it could hardly be possible that the schooner should get so far away from the direct line. All the circumstances of the affair are so suspicious that efforts will undoubtedly be made to find the missing crew, and it is hoped the search may be successful. Cpt. Hilliard was a highly respected citizen of Portland, and the mate, George S. Banning, a young man twenty-eight years of age, resided in Haddam, whore he was much esteemed. The funerals of both were recently attended.

Report of death of Cpl Roger Lalonde.
Report of death of Cpl Roger Lalonde.
On February 1, 1953 RCAF Lancaster KB914, which had earlier been on an anti-submarine exercise, headed to Goose Bay, Labrador, to join in the search for a missing civilian aircraft. There were 9 crew members aboard the Lancaster.
Cold weather conditions which included rain that soon became freezing sleet and heavy snow, made the flying difficult. The airplane, approaching Goose Bay for a landing suddenly had only two of its engines working; and to make matters worse the Goose Bay air base had to shut down temporarily because of the poor weather situation, and its Ground Control Approach (GCA) system was not available. So the Lancaster was ordered to divert to Torbay, Newfoundland, instead. With the continuing worsening weather, the loss of the plane's engine power, and a change in flight direction, the radio contact that ground personnel had had with the plane suddenly ended. Lancaster KB914 was declared missing.
The search was hampered by more bad weather and, to make matters more difficult, there were two other missing aircraft that also required attention.
On June 15, 1953 the wreckage of the Lancaster KB914 was spotted from the air. An RCAF ground search party flew out to the wreckage site to recover the human remains and to investigate the scene.
On June 26 funerals were held in Greenwood, Nova Scotia, for the nine airmen-the ceremonies took place in the Catholic Chapel and in the Station Drill Hall. The body of each RCAF airman was then transported to his Canadian hometown for final burial.

Retired man dies in apartment fire
Retired man dies in apartment fire
Retired man dies in apartment fire
By NANCY PAUL Whig-Standard Staff Writer
A 63-year-old Kingston man died early yesterday morning of smoke inhalation following a mattress fire in an apartment at 76 Pine St.
Dead is Leland (Earl) Dunleavy.
Firefighters found Dunleavy shortly after 6 am in his bed in the smoke-filled apartment.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the blaze. Smoking in bed is believed to be the cause of the fire.
Kingston Fire Chief Cowdy said that the occupant had not installed a smoke detector in the apartment as required by city bylaw.
“Compliance with the city bylaw is not only sensible but also life-giving” he said. “We get a lot of calls from neighbor who hear smoke alarms providing early notification of the problem”.
A resident of the apartment next to Dunleavy’s said: "I guess I was the first to smell the smoke”.
The woman who asked not to be identified said that she had risen early to go to work and noticed an acrid odor.
When she discovered that the hallway was full of smoke she went upstairs to awaken superintendents Douglas and Valeries Niles.
They called the fire department before using the master key to open the door to Dunleavy’s apartment, Mrs Niles said. However they were unable to enter the apartment because of dense smoke.
Cowdy said that firefighters, wearing breathing equipment, made their way to the back of the apartment to the bedroom, where they discovered the dead man.
"The fire was confined to the bed itself”, he said, adding that there was little fire damage to the building, only some smoke and water damage.
Both the woman in the apartment next to Dunleavy’s and a neighbor ft om across the hall, Helen Bickell, said that they had arrived home at approximately midnight on Saturday night and had not noticed a smell of smoke.
Niles said that she had gotten to know Dunleavy quite well in the three to four years that he had lived in the apartment building. Dunleavy had retired here from British Columbia, said Mrs Niles. Dunleavy is survived by brothers, Patrick, of Kingston and Lawrence and William of Brockville and sisters Helen Sheridan and Margaret Picotte, also of Brockville.
He is also survived by several children, grandchildren, nieces and nephew.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Richard Oathout
Richard Oathout
Richard Bruce Oathout, 81, of Lowell, VT died April 16, 2016 at North Country Hospital in Newport City, VT after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept 9, 1934 at home on Washout Road in Glenville, NY to the late Adelbert Arthur and Dorothea Jorgensen Oathout. He was one of nine children.
Dick attended Rabbit Hollow School, a one-room school house on Washout Road and graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School, class of 1952. He was a veteran of the US Army and received a good conduct medal. He was a self-employed carpet installer until he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Mason Oathout, a son, John M Oathout, a granddaughter, Savanah Oathout and her mother, Leah Erceg and by his step-sons, Bill and Stephen Hull and his step-grandchildren Lynita, Mark, Benjamin, Anastasia, Matthew, Mark, Michael, Melissa, Miles, Chris and Tim. Richard was predeceased by a step-son, David Hull, his siblings Dorothy Jean matthews, Theodore, Clifford and Adelburt Oathout and a nephew and a niece, Sherry Harwood and Eric Oathout.
Dick loved to read. It was his passion. He also loved to write and sit and meditate. He saw beauty in rain drops on a window, in a sunrise and a sunset. He wrote " I can sit with a good book and travel anywhere in the world. I can see the sun rise and set in every corner of the world whether it be in England with Winston Churchill or the South Pacific with Gen. Douglas MacArthur in WWII." He also said "I always wanted to go to Alaska but it is okay, I have traveled all through Alaska in the books I read."
About 48 hours before he died, Dick's son, John, other family members as well as some good friends of his, were gathered around his bed. He and a young friend reminisced about certain books they shared, how Dick inspired him to read and that was the fuel that opened doors for the young man to be all he is today. Dick was enjoying this time of reminiscing. He was smiling and interacting. As the room fell quiet, Dick looked from one to another, smiled and said "too bad I can only die once."
A memorial service and interment will be at Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville, Saratoga County, NY on June 3 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any public library of your choice in memory of Richard B Oathout. Reading was his passion.
