He attended the Mennonite and Central Christian Churches. He operated a spice & herb shop and flea market at his home for several years. | 565 | | Literally Roasted LITERALLY ROASTED The Horrible Death of Mrs. H. E. Wiley, an Estimable Woman of Cayuga CAYUGA, N.Y. May 9.?About 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, the neighbors of H. E. Wiley were startled by hearing a scream issuing from his home. Upon investigating, they found Mrs. Wiley completely enveloped in flames and before they could be extinguished her clothing had been completely burned from her body. Medical aid was at once summoned and everything possible was done to alleviate the suffering of the unfortunate woman, but after twelve hours' of intense suffering, she died at 1:20 this morning. Mrs. Wiley had, but a few minutes before the accident, been out in the garden burning brush and it is generally believed that a spark from the burning brush had lodged in her dress and had burst into flames after she entered the house. Mrs. Wiley was in her 80th year and was unusually active for one so old; She was a most excellent woman. Besides her husband, H. E. Wiley, she leaves four sons, H. S. Wiley, of Wiley & Co.; Chauncey, Theodore aud William, and two daughters, Mrs. William Finney of this place, and Mrs. A. H. Smith of New York city. | 574 | | Luta Douglass Mrs. Charles Fletcher (Luta Douglass). At 10:15 last evening on the day following her forty fourth birthday, Mrs. Charles Fletcher passed suddenly away at the home of her mother, Mrs. Maria Douglass at 403 East Main Street. Mrs. Fletcher was stricken with a paralytic stroke about a year ago and has been in failing health ever since. Her sudden death came quite unexpectedly to the immediate members of her family. Yesterday at noon she took a sudden turn for the worse and kept sinking fast until the final summons came. Luta Douglass was born in Unionville, Illinois, April 1, 1869. She grew up in this vicinity, received her education in the Morrison schools and won for herself an excellent reputation as a teacher before she was united in marriage to Charles Fletcher in January, 1881. Mrs. Fletcher continued to follow her vocation as a teacher and was connected with the Morrison schools during all her married life until about three years ago when her impaired health forced her to give up the work. The deceased is survived by a husband, Charles Fletcher, one son, Freeman, who was in Chicago at the time of his mother?s death a mother, Mrs. Maria Douglass, at whose home Mrs. Fletcher was staying at the time of her death; and one sister, Gertrude J. Douglass, a resident here and a teacher in the Morrison public schools. The Morrison schools closed Friday afternoon in respect to the memory of Mrs. Charles Fletcher whose funeral services were held that afternoon in the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Fletcher was a teacher in the grades of the local schools for a number of years. Her funeral was the largest in this city for many months. Fifty mourners occupied the seats around the bier at the church in addition to two hundred others who assembled to pay their respects to their beloved friend. The floral tribute paid the deceased was unusually large and beautiful.. Mrs. Fletcher?s funeral today. A large crowd from Morrison was well as from out of town attended the funeral of the late Mrs. Charles C. Fletcher this afternoon. Services were held at the home at 2 pm and at the Presbyterian Church at 2:30, Rev. W. C. Crofts officiating. Burial took place in Grove Hill cemetery. Mr. Pennock died at 8:45 Monday, July 1 after his truck ran into a house in Bethalto. Mr. Pennock was united in Holy Matrimony on Sept. 26, 1942 in Palmyra, MO, to L. Josephine Sackett. To this union was added four daughters, Mrs. Janice Carpenter, House Springs, MO, Mrs. Linda Richardson, Alton, Mrs. Norma Ussery, Colchesster, IL, and Dianna Pennock, at home. In addition to his wife and children Mr. Pennock is survived by one brother, Stanley Pennock, Pittsfield, Il; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Freeman Pittsfield, IL, Mrs. Dorothy Meece, Springfield, IL, and Mrs. Rosa Mae Daniels, Pittsfield, IL; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was employed as a machine operator at Alton Box Board since 1951. Although Mr. Pennock will be greatly missed by all of us who loved him, we would not wish to call him from his celestial abode and his intimate fellowship with our Saviour who prepared him for death. We can only prepare and await the glad hour when Christ shall beckon us to come home where we shall join him for eternity. | |

Born in Logansport May 5, 1908 he was the son of Wilson and Ella Sherman. He was a veteran of WWII. Sherman was a professional motorcycle stunt rider and traditionally rode in the Elwood Fourth of July celebration events. | 597 | | Marjorie Spratt With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Marjorie Spratt on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at the Portage District General hospital at the age of 83 years. With her family by her side and stories and laughter in the air, Mum went to join her true love. Left to cherish Marjorie?s memory are her children Cal (Debbie) Spratt and Tammie (David) Miller of Portage la Prairie, MB, grandchildren Ryan (Britt) Spratt, Cory (Andrew) Moar, Tyler Miller and Evan Miller, great-grandchildren Eberley and Tassyn Spratt and Ayla Moar. Marjorie was predeceased by her beloved husband Hugh ?Bud?, parents Fred and Elsie Johnson, brother Danny Johnson and sister Laura Sigmundson. Mum was born in Baldur, MB. She graduated from Baldur School and started her career with Manitoba Telephone system at 16 years of age, where she remained until her retirement 1990. She worked the switchboard for many years, and later moved downstairs to the engineering department. She moved to Portage in 1957, where she met the love of her life, and they went on to raise their two children. In her younger years, Mum curled and played ball with the ANAF Scarlets, and she always had a love for flowers and gardening, keeping up Dad?s tradition of growing tomatoes from seed. In her later years, she enjoyed watching curling and talking hockey with the grandchildren, and doing her daily morning crossword puzzle. Mum and Dad spent 30 years camping at Sportsman Corner, having good times and many laughs with their long-time friends. Mom always looked forward to September long weekends, as we all congregated there for the big derby. Mum liked to crochet and made afghans for everyone in the family including great-grandchildren. She always had an open door policy, as it takes nothing to put another potato in the pot and another plate at the table. Her smile, laughter, charm and wit will be lovingly remembered by all who received the gift of knowing our Mum. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 1:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, Portage la Prairie, MB led by Rev. John Dolloff. Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. She was born Mar 20, 1891 at Moose Creek, Canada, daughter of Arthur and Catherine Auterkirk (Dillabough??) Price. When she was a small child her family moved to a farm near Canton, where she lived until her marriage to Mr. Steenberg. The ceremony took place Apr 30, 1911 in the Potsdam Methodist Church. Later the couple resided at Winthrop and Brookdale until five years ago, when they came to Waddington to make their home. Surviving are: her husband, Harley and two sons, Arthur, Massena and Harley Steenberg, Massena Springs and four daughters, Mrs. Walter(Isabelle) Douglas, Winthrop, Mrs. Herald (Viola) Burnap, Winthrop; Mrs. Alonzo (Arlene) Wood, Massena; Sylvia Steenberg at home, a student at Waddington High School; two brothers, Walter Price Potsdam and George Price, Massena; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Dora) Jerome, Potsdam; Mrs. Merritt (Laura) Bice, Ogdensburg; 13 grandchildren Predeceased are a daughter, Florence Steenberg at age of six months.
