A Casualty - House Blown Down at Portage du Fort.
The only accident we have heard of, resulting from the late earthquake, occurred at Portage Du Fort, Mr. Swalwell of Ottawa, was about to build a new house alongside the one he was living in at Portage Du Fort, and had finished digging the foundation the evening before. In the middle of the night This house began to tremble and sway violently and at length, with a heavy lurch, it tumbled into the cellar along side of it. There were eleven persons sleeping in the house that night, besides Mr. Swalwell, yet wonderful to relate, not one of them received the slightest injury, although the house was thrown into ruins. - Ottawa Free Press.

The Halifax Memorial was erected by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to commemorate those Canadian sailors, merchant seamen, soldiers and nursing sisters who lost their lives at sea, and also bears the names of men of the Canadian Army stationed in Canada who have no known grave. The Memorial commemorates 274 casualties of the First World War (on Panels 1 to 3) and 2847 from the Second World War (Panels 4 to 23).

The Late James McClelland
The death of James McClelland, which occurred on the afternoon of Wednesday October 20, removed from the Adirondacks a man who had been identified with the growth and prosperity of the village of Saranac Lake during practically it's entire existence. Born in the County Armagh, Ireland, in 1831, he removed with his parents to Canada when an infant, and, before reaching his majority, married Mary E. Wise, and settled in a small lumbering district in the heart of the then comparatively unknown Adirondack wilderness. For thirty years he followed the business of guiding during the summer and lumbering in the winter. As a guide Mr. McClelland always ranked among the honorable and trustworthy in the profession, and was employed by some of the best parties that came to the woods. The fact that he was often engaged by the same parties season after season is sufficient proof that the services he rendered gave satisfaction. As time advanced, the little lumbering district developed into the enterprising Saranac Lake village of today. Its early growth was slow, and the amusements to be enjoyed during the long winter evenings were few. Mr. McClelland was possessed of much natural ability and wit, and his fund of interesting anecdotes and experiences were ever in demand. For a considerable time he was the regular contributor to the Troy Daily Times, the Essex County Republican and other publications. He was often called upon to speak at the debating societies, to which he always belonged and which he greatly assisted in keeping alive and interesting. When the only religious services at Saranac Lake were the Union meetings held at the school house, Mr. McClelland was a regular attendant, and always contributed to the support of the preacher, not only at the Sunday collections, but at church socials and by subscriptions as well. He had a remarkably good understanding of the Bible, and for a long time was the Bible class teacher in the Sunday School. He has a kindly and sympathetic heart, was a friendly and obliging neighbor and a worthy and respected citizen. He was the father of a large family for whom he had the deepest affection and whom he educated to the best of his ability. During the school session his children seldom were absent, and always ranked well in their studies, causing him to entertain in them a natural and justifiable pride. His pleasantest and happiest hours were those enjoyed at his home fireside, surrounded by his wife and children. He will be missed not only by those of his home circle, but by his many friends and acquaintances throughout this portion of the Adirondacks. Mr. McClelland is survived by his widow and nine children, two sons and seven daughters, who have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement. The funeral service was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Friday, Oct. 22, and was conducted by the Rev. Clarence Miller, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Sevell.

The funeral at Clayton on Monday of Mr. Thomas McKay was largely attended, friends being present from Ottawa, Carleton Place, Lanark, Middleville, Arnprior, Pakenham, Almonte and Blakeney to pay respect to one who has spent all his life in this vicinity.
Mr. McKay was born in Darling, a son of the late Alexander McKay and his wife Esther McDonald, and was in his 90th year. His parents came from Scotland, in the year 1832 and settled in Darling 66 years ago.
Deceased married Annie Rintoul and they settled on the farm owned by Mr. Charles McKay. About six years ago Mrs. McKay predeceased him and since that time he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. John R. Reid in Ramsay. Не is survived by two brothers, James of Middleville and Hugh of Merrickville; also four daughters, Mrs. John R. Reid of Ramsay, Mrs. Wm. Meaty of Minto, Man.; Mrs. John W. Robertson of Ewart, Man.; Mrs. Janes Rodger of Almonte; five sons, John of Arnprior, Alex of Sinclair, Man., Thomas of Sinclair, Man., Welland of Almonte and Charles of Darling.
The service was conducted by Rev. A.J. Fowlie of Almonte, assisted by Rev. G.F. Maner, of Blakeney, at the home of Mr. John R. Reid. Interment was made in the United church cemetery at Clayton. The pallbearers were four sons, John, Thomas, Welland and Charles; two nephews, Alex McKay of Middleville and George McKay of Arnprior.

Predeceased by her parents, Barbara and Harvey Spencer; sister, Florence Ransomme; brothers, Bruce and Norman Spencer and father-in-law, John Foley.

Theresa B. Jerome, 89, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 04, 2017 at Windsor Health and Rehabilitation Center. Theresa was born in Meriden, CT. to the late Jacob and Sophie (Baziak) Barnas. Theresa was married to the late Leroy Warner and her three children were born from this union. Later in life she met and married the late Edwin L. Jerome Jr. She retired from Pratt & Whitney after more than 20 years of service and was a faithful member of Truth & Freedom Ministry in Windsor, CT where she was also the church secretary. After her retirement she ran a neighborhood day care from her home. She was a treasured companion assisting her daughter at ? Pampered Chef Shows? Theresa and her family enjoyed many summers vacationing in Maine, she was an avid cook, knitter and had a passion for holiday crafts. Her home was kept in away which made all who entered feel welcomed.
Theresa was called ?Mother Theresa? by her family and close friends, because of the unconditional love she had for her children and friends. Although she hasn?t spoken in many years, many caregivers and passersby remarked on her warm comforting smile, there was a light within her no disease could extinguish.
She leaves to cherish her memories; sons, David (Pamela) Warner of San Diego, CA, and Paul Warner of Knoxville TN; daughter, Kimberly (David) Lingenheld of Bloomfield, CT and step- son Rusty Jerome of Milwaukee, WI ; six grandchildren; Sarah, Colton, Clarissa, Daniel, Taylor, Brianna and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Theresa was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Nick and Anthony; and her sisters Mary, Stella and Anna.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Carmon Funeral Home 807 Bloomfield Ave, Windsor, CT. Family will begin receiving friends at 12:00 noon.

Theron Kirk was born in 1919 and died October 1999. Theron retired from San Antonio College as Chairman of the Music Department and Director of Choral Organizations. After retirement, he became active as a docent at the San Antonio Museum of Art. His education includes study at Baylor University, Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University and the Eastman School of Music.
He is the composer of more than 1,000 published works for chorus, chamber groups, symphony orchestra, vocal solo, organ, carillon, and a one-act opera. The Philadelphia Orchestra, Chicago Chamber Orchestra and the orchestras of Winnipeg Canada, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Memphis, Detroit, San Antonio and Houston have performed his symphonic works.
Theron Kirk has held the national office of president of the American Choral Directors Association. He has taught as a visiting lecturer in the summer program at the University of Southern California, the University of Illinois, Central Missouri State University College and at the National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan, in the University of Michigan Music Division. Theron made significant and lasting contributions to the cause of Music in America and was the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award for teaching excellence in 1975.
Survivors are his wife Carla, three sons Padriac, Kevin, and Sean, two daughters, Laura Reimers and Meaghan Welch, and seven grandchildren. If you so desire, the family has asked that memorials be sent to the Docent Program at the San Antonio Museum of Art.
