David E. Moore Follows Wife to Sepulcher Within Year.
Death, within a year after the passing of his wife, last Monday called David E. Moore, one of Chino's most loved pioneers, to his final rest at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ralph C. Homan. Mr. Moore had not been well for more than a year and the death of his helpmate for 61 years during the early part of this year created in him the spirit of restlessness and an unwillingness to combat the final summons longer. His death was not unforeseen then when he took ill again a few days before his demise.
Mr. Moore was a native of New York, born April 24, 1850, and at the age of two years went with his parents to Iowa where the family farmed. He grew to young manhood in that state and on March 14, 1871, was married to Mercy Malora Banning at what is now Preston, Jackson county, Iowa. Herre the couple lived until the fall of that year when Mr. Moore disposed of his blacksmith business and moved to Green county, Iowa, where he engaged in farming until 1873. In that year he sold his Iowa farm and joined his brother in a westward trek to Kansas, homesteading in Smith county. Grasshoppers and drought caused them to forsake the homestead and they purchased 160 acres in Phillips county, near what is now the town of Kerwin. On this place the family remained for 17 years, selling out in 1892 and coming to California.
The first two years after coming to this state were spent in Pomona but with the opening of the sugar factory here for its second season, Mr. and Mrs. Moore moved with their family to Chino. This city has since been their home, the family circle being broken by the death of Mrs. Moore last May.
To Mr. and Mrs. Moore were born four children: Herbert, who died in infancy; Walter M. of Laguna Beach, Don E. and Mrs. Alma Moore Homan of Chino. The three children and five grand-children survive.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the M. E. church, Rev. Elmer S. Andersen officiating. Burial was in Pomona cemetery. Glenn A. Henry of Richardson & Henry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements." | Moore, David Elias (I05232)

Death Cuts Short Promising Career Of Young Doctor Willard E. Johnson, Former Almonte Boy, Dies This Morning In Montreal
Almonte people were shocked to learn of the death in Montreal at three o'clock this (Thursday) morning of Dr Willard E. Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Adam Johnson of Almonte, in his 34th year. Dr Johnson visited his relatives here at Christmas time. He knew he was suffering from a form of stomach ulcer and hoped it would yield to medical treatment and observance of a special diet. On Friday afternoon last, shortly after he had been engaged in an operation on a patient, he suffered an acute attack to the trouble that had been bothering him for some time. An immediate operation showed that a rupture had occurred at the point where the ulcer was located thus inducing peritonitis. As time passed it looked a though the peritonitis would clear up but pneumonia set in thus complicating the patient's condition and narrowing his chances of recovery. In spite of the best attention that could be provided Dr Johnson passed away early this morning. His parents had gone to Montreal when his condition became serious last Friday. His three sisters left Almonte on an early train this morning when it was decided their brother had but a short time to live. Their train reached the city at seven o'clock, several hours after death ensued. Dr Johnson was a promising young physician and surgeon who had already made considerable progress on the ladder that leads to professional success. He was born in Almonte on Dec 26th, 1902, and attended the public and high school here. He was most successful in his studies and entered McGill University at the early age of 17. He graduated with the degree of M.D., C.M. in 1925 and took up practice in Montreal. Dr Johnson became associated with Drs William and Howard Reilly, natives of the Almonte district and graduates of the local high school, who have been prominent in the medical circles of Montreal for a long time. He was appointed resident doctor for the Mount Royal Hotel and later for the Windsor Hotel. For some years he was on the staff of the General Hospital and six months ago received the coveted recognition of appointment to the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital. Dr Johnson leaves his parents and three sisters, Mrs Grant W. Dunlop and Misses Isobel and Margaret of Almonte. A service will be held in Wray's undertaking parlours, University street, Montreal, at 4 p.m. Friday, and the body will be brought to Almonte that night on board the train that arrives her at 10.33. The funeral will be held from the family residence, Queen street, on Sunday afternoon, at 2.30 o'clock to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. There will be a service at the house half an hour earlier. The sympathy of a large circle of friends in Almonte and district goes out to the bereaved parents and sisters.

Death Removes Popular Citizen
Adam Johnson Was One Of Best Known Men In Almonte District
Death claimed one of the best known men in this district, Wednesday, in the person of Adam Johnson, who passed away at his home on Queen Street, at the age of 80 years. Mr Johnson had been in failing health for some time owing to a heart ailment but his condition died not become acute until a few weeks ago. A native of Bruce County, the late Adam Johnson was born in 1865 a son of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Johnson, pioneer settlers in that part of Ontario. He was one of a family of four sisters and two brothers, all of whom predeceased him except James, who resides in Kincardine.
Lumbered in Michigan
At the age of eighteen years he went to Michigan where he was employed in the lumbering industry, a line of work which he continued to follow in the Algoma District after his return to Canada. He was married in 1895 to Mary C. Munro, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Daniel Munro of Lanark Township. For five years after he was married he was proprietor of the Clifton House Hotel in Massey. He left the North Country in 1901 and took up land on the 11th concession of Ramsay for five years, moving to Almonte in 1906 where he had resided ever since. After removing to town Mr Johnson was agent for the Massey-Harris Machinery Company and handled real estate. He was always interested in community affairs, taking part in many public spirited movements. For many years he took an active part in the management of Almonte Fair serving as a director of the North lanark Agricultural Society and as its president for several terms. He was an honourary director at the time of his death.
Staunch Conservative
Other offices held by him were: member of the Almonte Public Utilities Commission for upwards of ten years; a member of the Auld Kirk Cemetery Committee and of Bethany United Church; a member of the county executive of the Progressive Conservative Party. A lifelong Conservative, Mr Johnson always could be counted on to take an active part during election campaigns. He was a good organizer and his services were valued accordingly. He was one of the delegates to the convention in Carleton Place which nominated Dr. W.G. Blair Sept 6th, 1944. That was the last of many such meetings that he was able to attend. On March 13th of this year Mr and Mrs Johnson celebrated their golden wedding.
Didn't Look His Age.
Adam, as he was known to a wide circle of friends was a cheerful man, whom it was a pleasure to meet. He held his age well and would have passed for 60 up to the time when his health began to fail. He understood conditions in the county and was popular with the farmers. He was a friend of the late Judge Scott of Lanark having known him when he practised law in Bruce County. Left to mourn a husband and father are the widow and three daughters, namely, (Gertrude), Mrs G.W. Dunlop; (Isobel) Mrs F.L. Fisher and Miss Margaret, all of Almonte. Dr, Willard E. Johnson, a promising young Montreal physician, died in 1936, which was a heavy blow to the family. The funeral will be held from the family residence, Friday afternoon, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The service will be at 2.30.
