Apparently the McClelland family moved from Ireland to Canada while James was an infant. His sister Agnes McClelland immigrated to the United States in 1840 at the age of 16; presumably James came at the same time at the age of 9. According to census records, their father was born in Scotland; their mother was born in Ireland.
