Mrs. Mary E. McClelland, who died at her home in Saranac Lake last week was a noble woman who, for more than 60 years was an influential factor in all phases of community uplift and benefit in that village. When she settled there it was little more than a logging camp and contained but seven families. She was the second teacher in the schools of the place and laid the groundwork for splendid citizenship in her pupils. In the Methodist church and W.C.T.U. she was among the foremost acting as president of the latter for many years. Before Saranac Lake had newspapers of it’s own she acted as a special correspondent from time to time for other papers entering the community and was for some time on the Farmer’s staff of correspondents. The farm left by her husband who died 21 years ago extended over what is now a large part of the thrifty Adirondack village. Her five surviving children are widely scattered, only one, Miss Lena McClelland, being left at Saranac Lake.

In the death of Mrs. Mary E. McClelland, aged 81, which occurred at her home No. 172 Broadway, Friday night, at 7:30 o’clock, Saranac Lake lost another of its pioneer citizens and a resident who for more than sixty years was a powerful factor in all phases of community uplift and betterment.
Mrs. McClelland was born at Elizabethtown, Sept. 13, 1836, the daughter of the late Roswell and Mary Demon Wise. At the age of 15 she was married to James McClelland, who died here 21 years ago. Shortly after her marriage, Mrs. McClelland came to Saranac Lake, and with the exception of four or five years during which she resided in Canada, she had lived here until her death.
When Mrs. McClelland came to Saranac Lake the village was then a very small hamlet. It was little more than a logging camp. Seven families comprised its entire population. The inhabitants led the rough woods life. Mrs. McClelland, who was the second teacher in the community, brought with her a kindliness and a keen insight into human nature that won the respect and the friendship of the youths and she was able to teach the rudiments of education and to lay the groundwork for the fine community spirit that quickly developed. Many of her pupils became prominent citizens and accumulated considerable wealth. She taught two years in the red schoolhouse on Lake Street. She was successful because of her remarkable patience and her unfailing good nature which characterized her through life and won for her the endearment of hundreds of friends. This kindliness of spirit which made her a loving wife and mother, was omnipresent and through it was wielded a powerful influence for good in religious and community movements.
Mrs. McClelland was naturally of a literary turn of mind and during her life she contributed many interesting articles to the press. When she came here there were no newspapers, but papers from other parts of the Northern New York circulated here and Mrs. McClelland was the local correspondent. She wasn’t a correspondent in the sense of writing day to day news but devoted most of her time to articles of splendid literary merit and carrying always an inspiring note. During the Civil War she wrote many poems and clippings of what she had written were voluminous. These were destroyed in a fire a few years ago. Mrs. McClelland retained a remarkable grasp of her mental faculties until her death and was able to recite from memory 90 poems.
Mrs. McClelland was active in church circles, being deeply religious but without fanaticism. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was always at the forefront in Sunday School activities and the organization of other church societies. She was for many years the president of W.T.C.U. attended in a drinking fountain erected near the St. Regis Hotel on Bloomingdale avenue, but it is said the fountain was destroyed by saloonkeepers whom she opposed.
Mrs. McClelland’s property extended over a large part of the village.
There were 13 children in the family, of whom the following survive; Mrs. Frank S. Barton and Mrs. George W. Walton of Salem, Oregon, Fred S. McClelland of Whitinsville, Mass., Mrs. Herbert Hazelwood of Mattawa, Ontario and Miss Lena C. McClelland of Saranac Lake, besides one brother, George W. Wise of Saranac Lake.
The funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. Alexander McKinley, pastor of the church officiating. There was a profusion of beautiful flowers. Members of the Women’s Relief Corp attended in a body. A special program of music was given, two hymns, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Abide With Me” being beautifully sung by a mixed quartet. The pall bearers were her grandsons, Thomas, Charles, and Gaylord McClelland, Paul Walton, Frank Washburn and George Quick. Burial was in Pine Ridge Cemetery.

George W. Wise - Company G
George W. Wise was born in Elizabethtown, New York, on April 21, 1842. He enlisted in Company G, 10th Vermont Infantry Regiment, in Williamstown, on Jul 30, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on Sept 18, 1863. Wise was rounded in the right hand on April 2, 1865, at the breakthrough at Petersburg. He was admitted to the army hospital at City Pointe, Virginia, and then transferred to Finely Hospital in Washington, D.C., where he was mustered out of service on Jun 12, 1865. After the war, he lived in Barre for some time. He received a gov't disability pension later in life for his hand wound and chronic diarrhea. Then, in 1907, his health detiorated to such an extent that he could not take care of himself, and he moved in with a neice in Saranac Lake, New York. George Wise died there on January 28, 1923. The death of Fred Joseph Moody notice of which was published Is these column last week, for over 50 years a leading citizen of this vicinity, prominent In many circles of life, occurred at his home, Rand and Strange Preserve Wednesday evening at 7.40 o'clock, August 5th, 1914, from cerebral hemorrhage.
At the death bedside were the family and Mr. Strange of New York.
Mr. Moody had not been had not been good health for some time previous to his death, but his condition was not such as to call for alarm. Born in Saranac Lake, February 28th, 1867, second son of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Moody, the deceased passed his entire life in Tupper Lake with the exception of one year when his parents resided in Saranac Lake. Mr. Moody was the oldest resident in this vicinity and was highly esteemed by all who had the pleasure of his friendship and whose life had bean a benediction to all within the circle of his acquaintance.
Ia the year 1883 he was married to Miss Mary Hinkson of Bloomingdale, and to this union six children were born, namely: Mrs. Albert S. Hosier, Misses Dera, Hasel, Nellie, Willard and Alberta, all of whom with his widow survive hint and who reside in Tupper Lake.
Mr. Moody was the best known of the Adirondack guides and in the early days acted as official guide for Edward H Litchfield and other well known New Yorkers who have since built palatial homes in the Adirondacks.
In the year 1901 he engaged as superintendent with Read and Strange owners of a large and valuable preserve on Little Simons Pond, which position he creditably held until hit death.
The funeral services took place from Grace Methodist Church last Friday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. A E Dudd officiating, and was attended by a large concourse of citizens and friends, burial taking place in the family plot in Tupper Lake cemetery. The pallbearers
were: D. J. Hayes, D. C. Randall, J. Howard Brown, William J Southworth, P. H. McCarthy and Clarence I. King.

In the mail comes a letter from Mrs. Mary Emma Poston of Miami, Florida with some sad news. "I write," says Mrs. Poston, "to let you know Mrs. Martha Ellen Washburn passed on to her Heavenly Home on Jan. 31 at a rest home. She had been in the home since Nov. 2 after a stay of 27 days in the hospital, after she broke her hip on Oct. 27. I had been to see her every day but once, and miss her so.
I want to express thanks to all the ones who wrote her. It was a joy to hear from some we lost track of many years ago. Mother was the last one of the thirteen children of James D. and Mary E. McClelland who were among the first settlers of Saranac Lake. Among the streets my grandmother laid out and named were Virginia, Prospect Ave, McClelland St, Hope St and Charles St. Sincerely, Mrs. M.E. Poston, 112 NE 48 Street, Miami, Florida." (I was very sorry to get this news. Mrs. Washburn was an avid correspondent, and I always enjoyed her letters.)

The death of James D. McClelland was a shock not only to his relatives, but to his friends, and all who knew him were his friends. He was so strong, so full of life and health, none could think of his dying as he did, after five days of illness. Accustomed to exposure to all weathers, he did not think it necessary to change his wet clothing before he went to bed on the Friday night before his death; yet this was apparently the cause of his fatal illness. The next day he was attacked with cholera morbus. He was work for his brother William at Racquette Falls, and far from medical aid. They did all they could for him, but neither he nor they knew how terrible was the disease that fastened upon him. On Wednesday, as he got no better, he decided to go to his father's at Saranac Lake. They made a bed in the boat and carried him to it. He would not allow his brother to go with him, as he knew he could be ill spared from home just then; and insisted that young Farmer would do just as well, and started for home. When they got Wardner's, at Stony Creek Pond, he could bear no more, and two men assisted him to the house. There everything possible was done for him and a physician from Wawbeek Lodge attended him, but too late; even then his case was hopeless. Late that night word reached his father that his son was very ill at Wardner's and a dispatch soon after told the same thing. But no thought of the desperate nature of his illness was entertained, and the night was suffered to pass without action. James had heard that his sister from New York was at home, and he sent word for her to come and take care of him. The next morning, getting what things seemed needful, the father and sister started for their dear sufferer, and reached him three hours before he died. He was so glad and grateful to see them and seemed to be content, though he had called for his mother through the night. His sister gave him medicine to relieve the dreadful pain, which had for many hours been all in his heart, and he thanked her with a smile, saying he knew she could do him some good, and he conversed clearly and lovingly with father and sister until the end came. Once he seemed to wander a little, and begged his father to set him back, he did not want to cross the river, he wanted to go up stream. The father replied brokenly that he was afraid his dear boy must cross the river that time, and he seemed to understand, and smiled. His last words were, kiss me father, and he returned the kiss so sweetly and fell asleep. Meantime dispatches had been sent the mother who had hastened to him, but met them returning just before she reached McCoy's. From the Bartlett place a dispatch was sent to the family to be ready, and the sad procession started down the lake. Two men kindly volunteered to come with them, and at ten o'clock PM they reached the landing, where were men with teams and lanterns to meet them. Arriving at home they were met by many of their neighbors, who had heard of their loss, and had made all needful preparations. Until the last sad rites were over the kindness and thoughtfulness of the neighbors could not be expressed. Each one seemed anxious to do all in their power to show their respect for the dead, and sympathy for the living. How grateful the parents and family are, words cannot express. May the dear Lord reward them, for we cannot. But whenever the thought of our bitter trial arises, the thought of their loving kindness will also arise. Distant friends were telegraphed for and Thos. Johnson and wife, of Ellenburgh Depot, and G.W. Walton and daughter from Keene, came in time for the funeral. The parents have only pleasant memories of him who has gone. He was a good and loving son, but we can only say, "God's will be done." -- M.E.

A pretty wedding took place on Tuesday, April second, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Walton, when their oldest daughter, Lettie May, was given in marriage to George W. Quick of Rotterdam Junction, the Rev. Geo. E. Stright officiating. The bride was daintily gowned in white silk and lace and wore a bouquet of orange blossoms which were sent by friends in Pasadena, California. The bridesmaids wore charming costumes of white, trimmed white lace. Miss Lulu R. Walton, sister of the bride, was Maid of Honor. W. Scott Whitbeck of Springfield, Mass., was best man. Miss Katherine Berger of New York acted as bridesmaid, and Harold Walton, brother of the bride, acted as groom’s-man. The wedding march from Lobengrin was played throughout the ceremony by Miss Louisa J. Walton. Among those present from out of town were: Mrs. Mary E. McClelland, grandmother of the bride, and Miss Lena C. McClelland of Saranac Lake; Mrs. Frank S. Barton of Schenectady; Robert L. Roberts of Lake Placid; Rev. and Mrs. G. E. Stright and Miss Bessie Cooledge of Jay; W. Scott Whitbeck of Springfield, Mass.; Miss Katherine Berger and Miss Marion R. Duncan of New York. Many valuable and useful gifts were received, including a generous supply of linen and silver. Miss Walton’s office associates presented her with a beautiful dinner set of Limoges china. The bride has many friends in this vicinity, where she has made her home from childhood. For the past three years she has held a responsible position with the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A. in New York City. The bridegroom is a young man of sterling qualities, who has won the liking and respect of the people he has met during his short visit in Keene. He is General Secretary of the R.R.Y.M.C.A. at Rotterdam Junction, N.Y. After the ceremony was concluded and the happy couple had received the congratulations of the assembled guests, the entire company sat down to a bountiful repast to which they did ample justice. The Rev. Mr. Stright superintended the decoration of baggage and the carriage which conveyed the six members of the bridal party to Westport. The carriage was profusely decorated with horse shoes and white streamers, while the horses looked gay in their rosettes of white ribbons. At four o’clock the bridal party departed amid a shower of rice and best wishes. On reaching Elizabethtown, they partook of a merry supper at the famous hostelry, Maplewood Inn, where they were joined by Miss Duncan and Ralph Walton. The happy couple left on the night train from Westport. After a few days visit among relatives in Ulster County, Mr. and Mrs. Quick will reside in Schenectady.

"Corvallis--Mrs. Lulu Quick, 78, former Salem school teacher who has recently been living in New York, died while on a visit here Tuesday. Mrs. Quick, the former Lulu (McClelland??), was born at Saranac Lake, N.Y., and taught school in that state until moving to Salem in 1912. She taught school for many years at Salem, until her marriage there in 1938 to George W. Quick. They moved to Maryland, where he died in 1944. The following year she returned to Salem, then in 1949 moved to Rotterdam Junction, N.Y. She came to Oregon for a visit two months ago. She was the first president of the American Legion Auxiliary Capital Unit 9, Salem. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. J.E. Sturgeon, Corvallis, two brothers, Paul Walton, Camilles, N.Y., and F.W. A very pretty wedding was celebrated at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.V. Ling on Christmas evening, when their daughter, Miss Erma Belle Ling was united to marriage to Paul H. Walton, both of Saranac Lake. The ceremony took place in a beautifully decorated alcove, the decorations consisting in part of holly and mistletoe sent from Oregon by the groom’s brother. Miss May Ling, a sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid and Gaylord McClelland as best man. A large number of relatives and friends, several of whom were from out of town, were assembled to witness the ceremony, after which refreshments were served. Rev. F. T. Love officiated and Mrs. M. E. Taylor presided at the piano. After Jan 1st, Mr. and Mrs. Walton will be at home at 70 River Street. Many valuable and useful gifts were presented to the newly married couple.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul H. Walton of 208 Farmington Drive, Camillus, who were married in Saranac Lake fifty years ago on Christmas Day, celebrated their anniversary yesterday. On Saturday they held open house for friends and relatives and on Sunday they were honored during the service at the Camillus Methodist Church. Later that day, a dinner party was given for them by their daughter, Mrs. Ruth Kearnes.
Although the Waltons moved to Syracuse in 1918 and later to Camillus, they have maintained their Masonic affiliations in Saranac Lake, he in the Whiteface Mt. Lodge 783, FAM, and she in the Order of the Eastern Star, 106.

Lieutenant Fremont W. Walton Honored Way Out In Oregon

Salem, Ore., Aug 25. - A patriotic party was given Thursday evening in honor of Lieutenant Fremont W. Walton, who recently returned from the first training camp of officers at the San Francisco Presidio, by his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R.D. Barton, 598 North Seventeenth Street, assissted by Mrs. F.S. Barton, an aunt of the guest of honor. Lieutenant Walton is only 21 years old and besides being an officer was given his sheepskin as a graduate of the Oregon Agricultural College last June. He is a brother of Dr. R.W. Walton who is a graduate of Elizabethtown High School. Lieutenant Walton left to-day for American Lake after a short furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Walton, 790 North Seventeenth Street.
Red, white and blue asters lent an appropriate decorative scheme in the rooms. Games were enjoyed earlier in the evening and a program of music was given. Besides ukulele and guitar selections, Miss Lulu R. Walton gave readings and Miss Grace Elizabeth Smith and Mr. Allen Manning sang. Later dainty refreshments were served with a cake covered with tiny fluttering flags.

Fremont Walton Visitation Today
Fremont W. Walton died Feb. 21 at Yavapai Community Hospital, following an auto accident. He was born Dec. 30, 1895 in the state of New York and moved to Prescott 10 years ago from California. He lived at 511 Pioneer Drive.
Mr. Walton was a graduate of Oregon State University, served in the National Guard in Oregon and in the US Army.
He was a member of the Aztlan Lodge No. 1 F & A.M. in Prescott, past master of the Masonic Lodge in Exetor, Calif. He attended Trinity Presbyterian Church here and was a former member of the Lions Club in California, very active in the American Legion Post 94 in Exetor, and was the third-vice commander in the state.
Survivors include: his widow Gladys, of Prescott; a sister, Mrs. Rena Sturgeon of Corvalis, Ore. several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Memory Chapel at 2 p.m. tomorrow with Dr. Donald Watkins officiating. Masonic and full military graveside services will be held at Prescott National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Memorial Chapel.

Daniel Galbraith, MP, MPP, owned the land at Rae Road and Concession 5 in the former Ramsay Township which he purchased in 1855. Upon his death in 1879, his son Robert took over the land, passing it then to his sister Phoebe, Mrs. Robert Black, in the latter part of the century. In 1923, the land was sold to Alex Munro from Darling Township, then in 1944 to Alex?s son-in-law Herbert Hazelwood. Today, the community of Galbraith is a sparse collection of farm homes and a brick bungalow on the site where the yellow schoolhouse once stood. The first one room Galbraith School, S.S. No. 5 Ramsay, was on a half acre of land at the top of the hill, which Mr. Galbraith had sold to the school trustees in 1870 for $1.00. He also gave land for a second school in 1875 on the opposite side of the road, the yellow schoolhouse. This school operated until 1969 when the Government of Ontario mandated the consolidation of county schools and bussed students to nearby Almonte or Carleton Place.
