J. Glenn Cougill
Amemorial service was held for J. Glenn Cougill, August 1st at Central Presbyterian Church. Glenn passed away July 25, 2007. A private burial service was held at Rest Haven Mausoleum with an Army Color Guard. Glenn was born September 21, 1918 in Conrad, Montana to James and Ida MacKenzie Cougill. The family moved to Eugene, OR when Glenn was 15 where he graduated from Eugene High School. He joined the Army in June 1941, after completing his junior year at the U of O, graduating in 1951 with a B.S. degree. He served in the Army from 1941 until January 1946, spending 15 months in the Aleutian Islands then at Fort Jackson, SC before embarking for Europe in 1944. He married Ellen McGee in Spokane, WA on July 3, 1944. He fought in the European Theater in France, Belgium, and Germany, ending at the border of Czechoslovakia on VE Day in 1945. During the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, he was awarded the Silver Star and three Bronze Stars. He was cited for his military action in a book, "The Little Known Front," written by Eric Urbain of Bras, Belgium which covers 3 weeks of fierce fighting in Urbain's home area. Glenn often attributed his survival to things he learned as a Boy Scout and Scouting Leader. Glenn and Ellen visited the Urbains in 2000.
Upon returning to Eugene, he joined his father in the real estate business and worked as a realtor for 55 years. In 1958 he and Howard Hansen merged their offices and became Cougill and Hansen Realtors. Joe E. Lewis joined the firm as a full partner in 1975 after many years as a salesman. The firm is still in business under the umbrella of John L. Scott, Inc.
During his business career he was a member of the Eugene Realtor Association, serving as president and numerous other positions, including Director for the State. Glenn was instrumental in the formation of the Eugene Multiple Listing Association, serving as its president and a director for several years. He was awarded the prestigious Realtor of the Year designation. Continuing as a community leader Glenn served as Chair of the Room Tax Committee for the City of Eugene/Hult Center and for 25 years helped guide Cascade Manor into the fine institution it is today. He also belonged to Rotary, Eugene Country Club, Al Kader Shrine, Masonic Lodge, Oregon Community Foundation, Board of Directors of Home Federal Savings and Loan, Elks, and the Eugene Executives Association.
Various business projects included the development and ownership of Garden Valley Shopping Center in Roseburg for 25 years, Drive 'n Save Markets in Eugene, Roseburg and Cottage Grove and many housing developments in the Ferry Street Bridge area. After retiring from the office, he built Summerfield Estates, a 115-lot retirement home development.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed golf, cards, gardening and did extensive traveling with Ellen over the years.
Glenn belonged to the Central Presbyterian Church for 73 years, was a Deacon and served on various committees and projects. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Laurie Weaver of Cottage Grove, a son, Paul and wife, Marla, of San Diego, five grandchildren: Alaina Bailey of Hillsboro, Jordan Bailey of Stayton, Jesse Weaver of Eugene and Sean and Katrina Weaver of Cottage Grove, and one great-granddaughter, Maya Bailey of Stayton.
